The Walking Street starts at the end of Beach Road, there where the large indoor beer bar complex is. Traffic is cut off from the Walking Street at five in the afternoon, this also applies to motorbike taxis, these then weave down the side roads to their destinations, well, as close as possible. All hell is let loose down the Walking Street as soon as it gets dark and when down the Beach Road there is only stop and go traffic, and, when the Baht bus queues are divided into two lanes by means of orange and white pylons. Things go on well into the night.

Everyone and everything meets up here, normal tourist families with kids, groups of Asian tourists, solo tourists from all countries, some holding hands with their beauty for the night, merchants with vendor trays selling cigarettes or flowers. Some Thais want to take and sell Polaroid photos, they have animals such as constrictors, parrots or large lizards with them and are waiting for tourists to have photos taken together with these animals. Others are doing pantomimes and hoping for tips, bar girls hurry back to their bar after a short time, mobile stuck to their ear, numerous dolled up ladyboys try to get off with someone.

One can buy everything one needs at the numerous street stalls. Swimwear or women’s’ shoes, teddy bears or international flags, cigarette lighters with swastikas or other indecent images. The local shops consist of gold shops, chemists and tailors, all have people there to coax one in, they stretch out their hand with a “Hello Boss” to try and start off a conversation and there are galleries with copies of famous paintings and supermarkets. There is also plenty of food: From the hamburger place to the sushi restaurant, from kebab to spiny lobster, from Thai soup to BBQ mackerel, one can get everything.

Not to forget is the main reason why we are here: The numerous bars, discos, pubs and gogos, and, in front of almost all of these are girls trying to coax us inside.

And all over the bright and colourful signboards belonging to the areas premises.

There are quite a few smaller side streets branching off the approx. 500 metre long WS, some of them have good gogos (try them out). Soi 14 is known as “Soi Diamond”, down here is a place with the world’s only revolving bar counter, there are also a few nice gogo bars. Soi 15 has quite a lot of beer bars, Soi 16 as well plus a few of the appropriate gogos such as the Boesche, X-Zone and the Catz. If you carry on down Soi 16 you will come to the Marine II disco on the left hand side, a further 50 metres on the right is the Insomnia.

The Walking Street is a little quieter once past Soi 16. At this end there is a disco in the “Bali Hai Plaza”, where the atmosphere is a lot better late at night.
